A Brief Overview of the Enthronement Movement

The Divine Mercy Image, painted as an act of thanksgiving by Adolf Hyla, hangs over the altar where St. Faustina's mortal remains are buried in the convent chapel in Cracow, Poland.

In 1992 the Mother General of the Congregation of Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy gave the negative of the image and her blessing to the foundress of Peace Through Divine Mercy apostolate for the work of Enthronement of the image in homes and churches. The work was officially introduced on July 4, 1992 in California. Bishop Francisco Garmendia of New York blessed the Enthronement Movement at a Mass in St. Thomas Aquinas Church in the Bronx, New York. He blessed the first pictures which were to visit homes to introduce the message and devotion to the Divine Mercy in conjunction with Our Lady of Guadalupe. The Enthronement of the Merciful Jesus quickly spread throughout the United States.

In 1995 Bishop Garmendia was the main celebrant at the largest bilingual celebration of the Feast of Divine Mercy ever held in the Archdiocese of New York, organized by the apostolate. Fr. Emilio Allu, rector of the Marian Shrine, was concelebrant. The following year Fr. Allu, spiritual advisor to the apostolate, was ordained a bishop for the Archdiocese of Boston. He co-authored The Image of Mercy, a book about the movement containing the Nine Graces of Enthronement and a Rite of Enthronement to be used in the home. Shortly after, he officiated at the Enthronement of five cathedrals in the United States.

In 1997, through the efforts of an American Jesuit missionary, who introduced the work of Enthronement to Mother Teresa, she sent this message to the foundress of Peace Through Divine Mercy:

"May God bless abundantly your evangelistic crusade of Enthronement of the Image of the Divine Mercy and Consecration to the Merciful Jesus. May He bless also your PEACE THROUGH DIVINE MERCY MINISTRY OF "Families of the Enthronement" and "Priests of the Enthronement." Let us pray.

God Bless You, Mother Teresa, M.C.

The Enthronement was also introduced in the Diocese of Jos, Nigeria by the late Archbishop Gabriel G. Ganaka, a great friend of the apostolate. In 1998 Archbishop Sean Brady, Primate of all Ireland, blessed the Enthronement apostolate as it was introduced to Ireland. On Mercy Sunday 1998, Most Rev. Séamus Hegarty, Bishop of Derry, N. Ireland, enthroned St. Eugene's Cathedral in Derry. Since 1998 over thirty of the churches of the diocese have been enthroned and devotion to the Merciful Jesus has taken root in the hearts of the people. Enthronement has begun in the Diocese of Raphoe, Donegal. In 2001, Holy Cross School in Belfast was enthroned.
